Here’s a tantalizing question: if you won a trip anywhere in the U.S. – all expenses paid – what type of vacation would you choose?

Travel Leaders posed that question to its clients nationwide, asking them which of the following types of vacation destinations they would choose: beach, cruise, golf, island, major city, mountain, resort, spa or national park. Here are the results:

1. Cruise vacation. More than a third of those surveyed would choose a cruise. That’s not surprising, as cruises offer fun, relaxation and an incredible variety of itineraries.

2. Island destination. More than 28 percent of island lovers selected Maui, Hawaii, as their ideal U.S. island destination.

3. Beach destination. Of these respondents, a commanding 61.5 percent would like to hit the beaches of Hawaii.

4. Resort destination. These respondents like to settle in and enjoy the amenities of an all-inclusive resort.

5. Major city. Those who enjoy a vacation in the big city would most like to visit New York City, followed by Washington, D.C.

6. National park. Yellowstone, home to spectacular geysers and other thermal wonders, is the top pick in this category.

7. Spa destination. There’s nothing like a spa vacation for refreshing the body and mind.

8. Mountain destination. Travelers who love mountain scenery would most like to view the peaks of Colorado followed by Alaska.

9. Golf destination. Golfers had a difficult time choosing one top destination: Arizona, Hawaii and North Carolina all tied for first place in this category.
