Largest Norwegian Cruise Line Ship Ever To Be Christened
New York, July 2, 2010 - The largest Norwegian Cruise Line ship ever built, the 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic, will be christened in New York City in a star-studded ceremony -- the start of a weekend of celebrations for the much-awaited new vessel.
Country music legend and longtime Norwegian Cruise Line fan Reba McEntire will serve as godmother for the ship during the ceremony. Comedian and Curb Your Enthusiasm star Jeff Garlin will serve as host, and there also will be a performance by clogging duo Heather and Clay Barnhart.
Bigger than all but a handful of Royal Caribbean vessels, the 153,000-ton Epic is more than 60% larger than the largest Norwegian Cruise Line ships currently at sea.
Billed as the largest ship ever to dock in the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, Epic arrived in the city following a maiden trans-Atlantic voyage from Southampton, England. At 200 feet tall, the ship cleared the Verrazano Bridge at the entrance to the New York harbor by just 24 inches. The ship is so big it had to drop 5 of its lifeboats when it arrived in the Hudson River before it could slide into its assigned berth at New York's Pier 88.
After the christening ceremony, Epic will set sail on a two-night preview voyage before returning to New York on the morning of July 4th to host the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks show (to be broadcast live on NBC at 9 pm ET Sunday). It then heads for Miami, where it will begin its first season of seven-night Caribbean cruises.
