Spotlight On: Geneva Switzerland
Situated between the white Alpine peaks and the hilly terrain of the Jura, the city of Geneva is known as the 'capital of peace'. The world's smallest metropolis is home to the European headquarters of the United Nations and headquarters to the Red Cross. But Geneva is also filled with cosmopolitan flair, elegant shopping, and breathtaking scenery. Set apart from the rest of Switzerland, Geneva offers contemporary art and history museums, quaint lakeside promenades and parks, and the lively alleyways of Old Town. Sites to see include a visit to Geneva's lakefront, St. Pierre's Cathedral, the Reformation Wall, and Maison Tavel.
Lake Geneva. Ringed with castles, quaint villages, and beautiful vineyards, Lake Geneva demands to be explored! The spectacular scenery of the Swiss Alps becomes a backdrop to the lake, and the ocean-like vastness of Lake Geneva begs to be explored by boat and train. Frequent trains to Lausanne and Montreux are available from Geneva to fill a full or half-day of scenic exploration. Escape the city for a few hours on a ferryboat and then return to Geneva for a decadent dinner. The Lake Geneva and Alps Regional Pass is worth investigating if you wish to explore Lake Geneva more fully.
Take a leisurely stroll around Geneva's lakefront. One of Geneva's most lively parks, the English Garden, was created in 1854 and contains the famous flower clock - a sculptured clock made of flowers. The tremendous water-jet fountain, Jet d'Eau, lies where the Rhone River flows into Lake Geneva. This icon of Geneva is one of the city's most famous landmarks. St. Pierre's Cathedral and The Reformation Wall
The famous Cathedral de St-Pierre is best known for its historic significance as the church where John Calvin gave his inspiring sermons during the mid-16th century. See Calvin's chair and climb the 157 steps of the narrow winding staircase of the North tower for spectacular panoramic views of the city. Then visit the 60-foot stone Reformation Wall monument nearby.
