Heidi Watts is the State Operations Coordinator of the Texas Marine Mammal
Stranding Network (TMMSN). Her job, along with her volunteers, is to try and
rescue marine mammals that are stranded along the beaches. If the animal is not
alive then their job is to gather information through a necropsy.
January through March brings higher numbers of phone calls into the TMMSN
office. This is calving season for Bottlenose Dolphins and unfortunately, many
of the newborns do not make it.
Listen in as Heidi explains to Talk of the Bay about the workings of the TMMSN
and what you should do if you happen across a stranded mammal.
This network of primarily volunteers receives no funding so they are dependent
on private and corporate donations. Currently, TMMSN is housed in a building
leased from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.
