April 24 – Oyster Restoration Party – San Leon
The Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) held a fundraiser at the 18th Street Pier Bar and Grill, in San Leon on Saturday, April 24. Bands played throughout the night, while guests decided which raffle basket to stake a claim in.
The primary focus of the fundraiser was to raise awareness and funds for the oyster reef restoration project
currently being led by GBF. More than half of the oyster reefs in Galveston Bay were destroyed by Hurricane Ike and GBF is taking steps to restore this vital asset. Did you know that oysters act as filters for our water. A single oyster can filter approximately 50 gallons of water each day….can you imagine the filtering results of thousands of oysters? Besides that, they are great on the half shell!
Listen in as Bob Stokes tells Talk of the Bay a little bit out spats and what the plans are for our oyster reefs. Galveston Bay Foundation is a wonderful organization that cares for our waters and surrounding areas. If you are interested in becoming a member please visit www.GalvBay.org. check out the pics... |
