TALK of
the BAY
April 28 – Into
the Blue - Galveston
One hundred fifty to two hundred marine mammals are saved each year by
the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network. When Heidi Whitehead and her
volunteers get an emergency call, they drop everything they are doing,
jump into their vehicles and head down to the beach, bayou or even deer
leases to rescue stranded marine mammals. They cover about twelve
hundred miles of coast line; now that’s a lot of territory to watch
over.
Into the Blue is a fundraiser for this organization. The funds raised
are used directly to help save marine mammals.
Listen in to Talk of the Bay as Heidi Whitehead, the State Operations
Coordinator for TMMSN, tells us about the organization and how some of
our marine mammal friends are doing.
Things to keep in mind if you find a stranded mammal.
1) Contact TMMSN immediate at 1-800-9MAMMAL
2) Stay with the animal and keep it upright so it can breath
3) Do NOT push it back into the water. These animals strand for a reason
and pushing them back into the water may do more harm.
