“In the beginning George said let there be Mardi Gras and it was good. Then Z
Krewe was formed and it was Z best.” This was the inscription engraved on a
plaque that was presented to the manager of Trumpets on May 4, 1994, Z Krewe’s
inaugural meeting and official birthday. “George” is a reference to George
Mitchell who revived the Mardi Gras! Galveston celebration in 1985.
Since 1994, the Zanies, as these fun loving Z-Krewe members liked to be called,
have been gathering and throwing beads off the Trumpet balcony in
celebration of Mardi Gras. With Big Daddy and Big Mamma in the lead, there is no
lack of Mardi Gras fun in this krewe.
Listen in as Desi McKinney, President of Z-Krewe, tells Talk of the Bay about
the krewe, their year round activities and of course their Mardi Gras events.
Regally led by the King and Queen of Z-krewe, the Z-Krewe Processional will wind
its way through downtown Galveston while Big Daddy and Big Mamma
enthusiastically encourage parade marchers and spectators to ‘let the good times
roll’.
This year once again, the famous marching band, the Philadelphia Mummers will be
participating in the Z-Krewe Processional. An all male band, the Philadelphia
Mummers are known for their outrageous and elaborate costumes and their
wonderful marching tunes. This is another one of those “don’t miss” Mardi Gras
events. The Z-Krewe Processional will be held on Saturday, February 2 at 1PM,
starting at 25th and Santa Fe and traveling through the historic downtown
district of the Strand.
