Mayor’s Report – League City

Hello everyone,

The meeting was called to order at 6 pm, with all members present and a full gallery.
The INVOCATION was given by Pastor Brad Heintz of Living Word Church of the Bay Area.
There were no appointments or proclamations this evening.

There were three PUBLIC HEARING AND ACTION ITEMS FROM PUBLIC HEARING and three subsequent votes on these zoning issues.

There were a long list of folks signed up to speak in CITIZENS REQUEST FOR HEARING BEFORE CITY COUNCIL, most of whom spoke in support of the Boundless Playground being located in League Park, and one other gentleman talking about a zoning change. We thank you all for taking time to come and speak.

There were no COUNCIL MEMBER nor MAYORS COMMENTS.

All items in the CONSENT AGENDA passed 7-0, which included items such as the awarding of the mowing contract, setting a public hearing on the FY2011 Budget for the September 14th Council meeting, etc.

In OLD BUSINESS, after some discussion, Council passed the rezoning of the acreage known as the Gun Range property by a 7-0 vote.  The zoning is split into three different sections, with some Neighborhood Commercial, some RS-7 to provide a buffer zone, and the remaining as General Commercial, which contains the Gun Range.

Also in OLD BUSINESS, Council turned down amending a Resolution regarding the construction of the Boundless Playground in the Chester Davis Sportsplex, as was passed in a Council vote in an August 5th Workshop of 5-2. After a discussion of locations in the Sportsplex and Heritage Park, Council voted not to change the location from League Park, by a vote of 6-1, with Joanna Dawson voting against. Parks Director Chien Wei announced that we are now in budget, which was not the case when the June 8th vote was taken.

Council went into EXECUTIVE SESSION and returned with no action to be taken.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:08.

I just want to say to you all that there were strong feelings in evidence during the Boundless discussions, but this is what open government is all about. We simply stopped and considered all the alternative locations for the playground, and because the project had finally come in-budget, everyone was delighted with the final vote. The old League Park has begun a new "career"!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and be sure you are ready just in case another hurricane looks our direction. Fall is coming and along comes football!
