A Soldier’s Legacy Lives – League City
A soldier's heroic story is often hard to tell, since the tale almost always involves great sacrifice. This is true of SPC Ray Joseph Hutchinson from League City, Texas, who gave his life for his country in 2003, on the battlefield of Iraq. He was part of the fighting ground forces for a year in Iraq; courageously carrying out combat missions as a paratrooper for the 101'st Screaming Eagles Army Infantry. SPC Ray Joseph Hutchinson was killed in action by a roadside bomb in Mosul, Iraq, right before he was to return home to the United States. But the goodness of his life did not end on that battlefield. His strong faith, which has touched countless lives, and his legacy of goodness continues forward with the Ray Joseph Hutchinson Foundation, which provides scholarships for worthy graduating Seniors from Clear Creek Independent School District. Clear Creek High School was his school, as well as Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.
So far, the Ray Joseph Hutchinson Foundation has awarded over $90,000 in scholarships since 2004, because of the generous hearts and invaluable support of the Bay Area Community. Each year, a unique event called Salute to Heroes is held at South Shore Harbour Resort & Hotel in the Crystal Ballroom, in League City. Salute to Heroes not only creates new scholarships for the Ray Joseph Hutchinson Foundation, the event also honors those serve in the United States military! This year's Salute to Heroes takes place June 24, Thursday, 6:00-9:00 p.m., in the Crystal Ballroom at South Shore Harbour Resort & Hotel.
Scholarships from the Ray Joseph Hutchinson Foundation are not based solely on academic achievement. Winners are also selected for their admirable character and their willingness to do good things with their lives to help others, which they write about in a letter that is part of the application process. Students can apply at any high school in CCISD by picking up an application at the offices of the school councilors.
