Stellar Spellers Prepare For Champion Spelling Bee
Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 27, 2010. Houston’s Public Broadcasting Station KUHT will air the Houston PBS Spelling Bee live on Channel 8 at 2:00 P.M. from the Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting on the University of Houston Main Campus.
Clear Creek ISD students, Alberto Zhang, a 7th grader at Space Center Intermediate School, and Chris Pulicken, a 6th grader at Westbrook Intermediate School were the champions of the Galveston/Chambers County Spelling Bee. They won the right to compete at the qualifying bee for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Congratulations are also extended to George Xhang, a 5th grader at Brookwood Elementary who was runner up at the Galveston/Chambers County Spelling Bee this year.
The top 55 spellers from 1,049 schools in 42 counties, from East Texas to Austin, will compete for a chance to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the nation’s highest-profile academic event. The top speller will win an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Washington, D.C. to represent Houston at the Scripps National Spelling Bee during Bee Week in May. Last year's national champion won over $35,000 in cash and prizes.
The purpose of the Spelling Bee is to help students improve spelling, increase vocabularies and develop correct English usage that will help them all of their lives. Bee participation also provides valuable experience in developing poise and sportsmanship, necessary skills for public speaking, performing arts, and athletics.
