Clear Creek ISD Extends Scout Salute on Special Anniversary
As the superintendent of a large school district, one of the most recurring realizations of this post is that we as a district cannot ensure the welfare and success of our students all on our own. It is a tapestry of families, community partners and organizations that enable Clear Creek ISD to grow the next generation of adults who are not only successful, but are meaningfully connected to their communities.
As the Boy Scouts of America turn 100 this year, I thought it was timely to call well-deserved attention to this mainstay of timeless values and character development in our society. For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America's youth.
Since 1995, Clear Creek ISD has recognized the Scout’s impact on our students and community through the Scout Citizenship Award. Although the award began on one campus, today each CCISD high school offers the award in honor of individuals, living or deceased, who have exemplified the tenets of the Scout Program. The memorial award on each campus is dedicated to the following individuals:
Clear Brook High School Scout Citizen Award dedicated to John W. Pepperday who demonstrated a passion and joy for family, teaching, church, and working with the youth in the Boy Scouts of America.
Clear Creek High School Scout Citizen Award dedicated to Patricia Louise Greenwood, a CCHS graduate and Girl Scout who had a love for people, animals, and the arts.
Clear Lake High School Scout Citizen Award dedicated to W. Norman Clayton who inspired young people to achieve all they are capable of becoming through his teaching, work with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Scout Programs.
Clear Springs High School Scout Citizen Award dedicated to Ray Olachia “Chief Ray”, a Mescalero Apache who honors the ways and traditions of his Native Americans through his respect for the land and wildlife, being a devout family man, and serving as a Scoutmaster.
Clear View Education Center Scout Citizen Award dedicated to Col. Michael E. Fossum who, as a devout family man, a NASA astronaut and an Eagle Scoutmaster working with the Boy Scouts, inspires young people to achieve all they are capable of becoming.
In the name of these individuals, each year the Scout Citizen Award is presented to one student on each campus who has brought honor to their school in various skill areas and who have represented their school’s finest ethical and moral character by earning the high rank of Gold Award in the organization of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., and the Eagle Rank in the organization of the Boy Scouts of America. The 2010 CCISD Scout Citizen Awards will be presented in May.
I commend these exceptional role models, all of our area Scout leaders who give so much of their time and themselves, and every Scout in Clear Creek ISD as they travel the wondrous journey. Thank you for your service -- We couldn’t do what we do without you. Scout’s Honor. Greg Smith, Ph.D.
