League City's Mayors Report, February 9, 2010 The meeting was called to order at 6pm, with all members in attendance.
After approval of outstanding minutes, we moved on to APPOINTMENTS, PROCLAMATIONS, PRESENTATIONS, AWARDS. The motion was made and seconded to appointment John Towner to the Destination League City Board. Motion passed 7-0.
I was happy to present a proclamation declaring February 23 as Betty Nelson Day in League City. This is in honor of Betty's retirement from her 25 years as an EMS volunteer. Betty was instrumental in the organization of our service, and we relly appreciate her dedication as a volunteer!
February 23 will also be "IHOP's National Pancake Day for Shriners Hospitals for Children" in League City. We presented this proclamation to representatives of the Shriners Hospital and IHOP. IHOP will be serving pancakes free except for your donation, so plan to come and eat a big stack!
CITIZENS REQUEST FOR HEARING BEFORE CITY COUNCIL.
Scott Jones of the Galveston Bay Foundation told us the state of oystering in Galveston Bay, and why it is so important to our economy. The GBF will be hosting a Public Meeting Regarding Galveston Bay Bacteria Levels on February 24, 2010 at 1:30-3:30pm at Clear Lake Park (5001 Nasa Rd. 1). COUNCIL MEMBERS COMMENTS
It was announced about a Victorian Ball to be put on by J'Nean Henderson of the Victorian Lady, on February 13 at Akers Hall. It will be Victorian costume, and more information can be obtained from Nana's Attic.
The HOA of Clear Creek Village has expressed thanks to the City for the courtesy of the City employees working in their subdivision infrastructure issues. My thank you to these City Employees also, for doing such great public relations for our City! Keep up the good work!
We are announcing again that the Library is conducting computer free classes on Microsof Office on the 4th Monday of each month from 6:30 to 8pm. To reseerve your place, call 281-554-1101.
We are begginnin to gather information for a new Comprehensive Plan for the future of League City. In conjunction with that, we have posted a survey asking what you, as an individual citizen, would like to see League city look like in the future. Please go to leaguecity.com and look for the survey in the right hand column. Your opinion is very important to us in planning for the future.
REPORTS FROM STAFF MEMBERS:
The DIRECTOR OF FINANCE reported that for the 25th year in a row we have won the Certificate of Excellance in Financial Reporting for our Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The award was made by the Government Finance Officers Association, and the whole Finance Department is to be congratulated.
The CONSENT AGENDA was passed 7-0.
There was no OLD BUSINESS.
Under NEW BUSINESS, the motion was made to table Item A, authorizing the dissolution of the City of League City Industrial Development Corporation, for 30 days. Vote was 7-0.
FIRST READING OF ORDINANCES-Council voted 7-0 to set the General-Special Election on Saturday, May 8, 2010, to elect Council Members ordering a runoff election on Saturday. June 19th, 2010, if necessary; providing for the registered voters of the City to vote on separate propositions for the amendment of the City Charter; and establishing procedures therefor. There will be a second reading on this in the February 23rd Council Meeting.
ACTION ITEMS FROM EXECUTIVE SESSIONS On Councils return, a motion was passed 7-1 to send a team representing council (Councilmen Baron and Phalen)to meet with representatives of MB Harbour regarding the 99-year lease, and report back to Council at the February 23rd Meeting.
Well, take heart everyone--the weather is less than desirable, but someone did see a robin last week and the blue bonnets will be here before you know it! This coming August we will give our eyeteeth for this this weather!
