CCISD Students Learning To Give Back

Students across the Clear Creek Independent School District (CCISD) are raising money for Haiti relief efforts. They are collecting, cash, checks and change in a variety of ways ranging from a one mile walk at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium to a shoe drive at an elementary campus.

“CCISD is committed to growing a generation of students who believe in community service,” explained Superintendent Greg Smith, “We want them to understand the importance of giving back.”

What follows is a list of campuses in CCISD and how they are raising money to help those less fortunate.

Clear Lake High School’s Student Council sponsored a one mile walk at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. “Going the Extra Mile for Haiti” raised $5800 for the Red Cross. Junior Cassidy Hurwitz came up with the idea after watching television reports about the devastation in Haiti.

Clear Springs High School held a Hat Day for Haiti Relief. Sponsored by the students newspaper staff (The Mane Standard), students paid a dollar to wear a hat to school. They raised $715 which will go to the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

Clear Brook High School’s French Club is collecting money for Haiti Relief. PALS (Peer Assisted Leadership) collected items such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant and toothbrushes to make care kits.

Westbrook Intermediate students recently gathered and sent supplies for the children of Iraq. They are also supporting CAN, a two week fundraising project to aide the people of Haiti. The concept of CAN (CCISD is Aware of Need) is to raise money through student and employee contributions. Money raised will be compiled and sent to the RED CROSS where it will be earmarked for Haiti.

Ferguson Elementary is collecting money for Hope for Haiti.

Hyde Elementary is having a shoe drive for Haitians.

Weber Elementary is participating in "Change for Change" to assist in Relief for Haiti and rebuilding efforts.

Clear Creek High School sponsored a 'Dollars for Haiti' on campus.

Bay Elementary launched "Give a Hand for Haiti." The school is EAGER to help others the way our community was helped after Hurricane Ike! Students brought a dollar to purchase a Hand - they wrote their name on the hand and hung it on the wall. Principal Erin Tite explained, “Our goal is to have the hands stretch all the way around the building.”

Clear Lake Intermediate School is collecting funds through English Language Arts classes. There will also be a Faculty vs. Student basketball game to raise money as well. According to Principal Brett Lemley, “Last year we raised about $1000 for Ike, so we hope to do the same for Haiti.”

Brookside Intermediate’s community service project is called Soles4Souls. The students and staff are bringing in new or gently used shoes to be sent to the Haitians. Clubs are collecting, wrapping, and identifying the shoes as men's, women's, or children's as a service project. The shoes will be taken to the organization in Galveston and they will take care of the delivery to Haiti. Also, 8th grade OMEGA students are sponsoring a "Change 4 Change" drive.  It includes a competition between grade levels and a campus goal of $1,500.  All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross International for assistance in Haiti.

Mossman Elementary is doing a texting fundraiser.  A list of all the numbers you can text was sent home and students are asking parents to make a donation. The students will then learn how to do graphs by graphing where the money went.

Wedgewood Elementary’s Student Council is collecting change to send to Haiti to help in the relief efforts. Students are encouraged to bring change to donate from January 25th - February 5th.

Goforth Elementary is collecting $2.00 for a jean pass to go towards the relief effort.

Clear Creek Intermediate asked students to bring a dollar in order to wear jeans. The students raised 231.60 and the Student Council is donating $268 to make a total of $500.00.

League Intermediate School, Home of the Mighty Bobcats, had a jeans day and raised $1,309.00 to send to Haiti.

Gilmore Elementary is raising money for Haiti and the student council is leading the way with the project. "Change for Change" was kicked off with an assembly.

Armand Bayou Elementary is holding a "Pennies for Haiti" fundraiser from Wednesday, Jan. 27 - Friday, Feb. 12.

At Victory Lakes Intermediate School, Kat Kirst's Omega Language Arts class put together a school-wide Haiti fundraiser. They have raised more that $2,000 from student donations.

Landolt Elementary raised $1,800 with their "Pennies for People of Haiti." All donations will be sent to the American Red Cross to aide in relief of the devastation suffered by this country and its people.  Students want to give a special thank you to the JSC Federal Credit Union and the Clear Lake branch for allowing us to use their coin counting machine.
