County Tax Assessor Elected Vice Chair of TxDMV Board
Galveston County Tax Assessor Collector Cheryl E. Johnson has been elected Vice Chair of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) Board. Appointed in October by Governor Rick Perry to represent tax assessor collectors on the nine member governing body of Texas’ newest State agency, she assumed her duties in November 2009 along with Chairman Victor Vandergriff of Arlington, Cliff Butler of Mount Pleasant, Jim Campbell, Jr. of Sachse, Ramsay Gillman of Houston, Janet Marzett of Keller, Victor Rodriguez of McAllen, Marvin Rush of Seguin, and John Walker, III of Houston.
House Bill 3097 transferred vehicle related functions once under the Texas Department of Transportation to the new agency including registration (passenger vehicles, commercial trucks and motor carrier operating authority), titling, dealership licensing and regulation, and auto theft prevention. The motor vehicle business in Texas generates more than $4 billion annually. These funds are used to help build and maintain the state’s transportation system and also support the general revenue fund.
With more than 21 million vehicles registered in the State, the services provided by the DMV touch every Texan. “We are focused on getting this agency up and running and holding it up as an example of what every government agency should look like,” stated Johnson. “We hope to implement technologies that will streamline operations, improve delivery of customer service, and increase motor vehicle industry growth across Texas.”
“We took a giant leap forward in the recent selection of Mr. Ed Serna as Executive Director of the TxDMV. His charge from the Board is to lead change that best organizes the agency’s operations to meet both today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities,” added Johnson.
