February 6 - Mardi Gras Opening Day of Parades – Galveston
The sun was shining and there was a light breeze; it was a perfect day to be outdoors catching beads. The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius, celebrating their 25th anniversary, kicked off the first parade of the 2010 Mardi Gras season. With approximately 20 floats the Krewe of Aquarius led the 75 unit parade down the Seawall. Marching bands kept the crowds entertained as each of the Krewes’ floats paraded by. Beads, stuffed animals, beads, trinkets, beads and candy were tossed everywhere and to everyone. It was great to see our friends from Krewe du Lac, dressed in their favorite pirate costumes and the Strawberry Festival, with their beauty queens, float by.
Following the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius parade was the Fire Truck parade.
With sirens blowing and bead throwing some of our very finest waved as they proudly rolled their trucks down the Seawall.
After the Fire Truck parade we headed down to the Strand, just to check it out. Yup, there was more bead throwing and people strolling going on down there too. And the Krewe on the Brazos, up on a balcony were very busy having one heck of a good time, in the true Mardi Gras spirit.
As evening drew near, the Krewe of Gambrinus gathered together in their staging area. With their elaborate floats and absolutely hysterical costumes this fun loving Krewe, led by George Black, proudly paraded down the Seawall for their Gambrinus Lights Up the Night parade.
