September 11 - Harvest Moon Safety Day - Seabrook
Lakewood Yacht Club’s Harvest Moon Regatta Chair, Andrea Todaro, has announced that the Harvest Moon Safety Day is slated for Sat., Sept. 11, 8:30 in the morning at Lakewood Yacht Club’s ballroom, 2425 NASA Parkway, Seabrook, TX. The 24th annual Harvest Moon Regatta, the 150 mile race from Galveston across the Gulf of Mexico to Port Aransas, will be held Oct. 21 – 24.
The Safety Day is a free, educational forum sponsored by a sub-committee of the Harvest Moon Regatta Committee which is chaired by Cindy Brooks Winton. The forum is open to any sailor interested in offshore racing.
“We will cover a wide range of topics for offshore racing, all addressed by professionals. Topics include boat preparation, offshore medication, safety regulations, right-of-way considerations, and entry/docking in Port Aransas at the end of the race,” related Winton. There will also be a safety equipment display and demonstrations for attendees.
Over 200 boats are expected to race in this year’s Harvest Moon Regatta. The race is organized by Bay Access, a charitable organization supporting amateur racing. It is hosted by Lakewood Yacht Club. Other sponsors include the founding sponsor Bacardi Rum U.S.A., Nautic Yacht Sales, West Marine, Banks Sails, Sea Lake Yacht Sales along with the City of Port Aransas and Houston Magazine.
“All Harvest Moon Regatta participants are strongly urged to attend the Safety Day workshop where details of the race will be addressed. Those who have already entered the race by that time will be eligible for a raffle drawing with a prize provided by Bacardi,” stated Todaro. The regatta is a Category 3 Open Regatta for all racing cruising spinnaker and non-spinnaker sailing yachts with a minimum length of 27 feet.
Racers should also note that the Harvest Moon Skippers meeting will be held on Fri. night, Oct. 15, 7:30 pm, in the club’s ballroom. Skippers can pick up packets at 6:30 pm in order to give them time to review the material, socialize, and purchase Harvest Moon merchandise. |
